sadfreezingbrit_archive: (some kind of messed up holiday)

One incredible feat of sleep-deprived bakery architecture. [23/??? artefacts collected]

[ It's the event's second night, around four o'clock in the morning.

The narration trusts that at this point everyone has found somebody to room with and is tucked into bed.

Fast asleep as opposed to completely deprived of the same ever since the event started.

And definitely not building a donut replica of Westminster Abbey in one of the conference rooms.

Nope.

Not happening anywhere at all. ]

[ ...For everyone who does not enjoy a little action at night, Philip will emerge from his building project in the morning and can subsequently be found
a.) making coffee in the coffee area
b.) drinking coffee in one of the cubicles and
c.) throwing coffee at the backstairs spiders

If you hear him humming a strange tune, well, that's just the melody his hot beverage gives off, because who needs a sense of smell when you can have a constant soundtrack instead?

[Evelyn rubs a hand over her face and sighs.]

I know it isn't safe, I burned my foot earlier. I just can't find my way around without my shoes off. It's a...a vibration thing.

[She fumbles for a chair - each little desk seems to have one - and sits in it.]

...I don't even know what floor I'm on.

[identity profile] sadfreezingbrit.livejournal.com 2011-08-21 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
This is the...

[ Luckily vibrations don't show how much worse for wear Philip currently looks. At least he hopes so. Nothing major, mind. Just bags under his eyes. Pale skin. And hands that are occasionally shakier than he'd like them to be. Sleep? What sleep?

He's been wandering at night. It's a little difficult to recall the exact location.
]

The third. It's the third floor.

[ A quick grab for the chair, making sure to turn it in the right direction for Evelyn. ]

...Does it work? How much can you actually "see"? Or... feel, I suppose.

[identity profile] libraritology.livejournal.com 2011-08-22 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Not very well, I'm afraid.

[She turns with the chair, startled by the swiveling and clinging to the armrests.]

I-I can smell things a little better, even though the scents are rather unusual, and the floor is...it rumbles.

[Evelyn gestures to the ground and her feet, one of which is red from acid. It's exceedingly hard to avoid the acrid-smelling goo dripping from parts of the ceiling in the building when you're blind.]

I can't really see anything, just feel when people are there, and smell them. You're sort of...lemony. And something earthy, like mowed grass.

[identity profile] sadfreezingbrit.livejournal.com 2011-08-22 03:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Lemony? [ Philip laughs. He knows somebody who'd get a kick out of hearing that. ]

...I actually can't smell anything at all, though I can hear the scents instead. The black acid is [ He frowns. ] like standing in the middle of a construction site, it's awful.
Edited 2011-08-22 15:04 (UTC)

[identity profile] libraritology.livejournal.com 2011-08-22 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
[Philip's somebody would totally get a kick out of hearing that, dude, you have no idea.]

So it is acid, then? That would explain the sulphurous smell. It was like rotting eggs.

[Flesh-burning, rotting eggs. Delicious. She even cursed when she stepped in it, not that anyone is ever going to know about the use of expletives.]

I think the most frustrating part of all this is that I know everything looks different, but I can't see it.

[Also it's scary to be in the dark all the time. D: ]

[identity profile] sadfreezingbrit.livejournal.com 2011-08-22 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I have absolutely no idea what it is, but I saw it burn clean through the floor and set a stack of papers on fire, so I'd rather not be anywhere near it.

[ Come to think of it, Philip is surprised (and glad) Evelyn is okay, given that her lost sense seems a lot more valuable. ]

To be honest you really aren't missing out on much, but... I could try to find a camera, if you want. Record a few things and hope the film doesn't disappear along with the event.

[identity profile] libraritology.livejournal.com 2011-08-22 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
That's all right. [She waves a hand.] No need to go out of your way when everything's going to disappear in a few days.

[Evelyn is also surprised (and glad) that she's managed to survive this long without her sight. She's planning on chalking up a lot of her success to sheer, dumb luck.]

Some others I met said that they didn't have their rooms. I woke up in mine, but I suppose it doesn't do me much good when I can't find it again.

[She twiddles her thumbs and glances up in Philip's direction.]

How have you been recently, though? All other things aside, I haven't seen you since...um...

[Since she got a little too tipsy.]

[identity profile] sadfreezingbrit.livejournal.com 2011-08-27 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
[ Fair enough, though it's not like Philip actually has a way he could go out of if he were to film things around here. ]

If your room's still there then I can help you find it again. Mine's been cut from the budget, apparently. I spent the room in one of those-- Sorry, I- I spent the night in one of those conference rooms.

[ Because he couldn't find a replacement. And because the sudden lack of medication is making him feel anything but relaxed, especially considering what he knows is about to come next.

Aches slowly creeping along until they become unbearable, until in a few hours tops withdrawal is going to make the rest of this event utterly unbearable for him.

He will choose not to mention this in his status report, just as he will refrain from completing Evelyn's sentence, although remembering their last encounter does bring an answer to her question to mind:
]

I think I found a stalker after all. Or rather he found me, I suppose. I met him on the beach while I was trying to avoid the rest of the event.

...Just a brief encounter, fortunately. No undesired kisses either and I haven't run into him since.

[ He takes a sip of his coffee. ]

What about you?

[ Coffee. ]

And, um, would you like some coffee?

[identity profile] libraritology.livejournal.com 2011-08-27 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)
[The only real problem for Evelyn so far has been the lack of sight, which is making it difficult to identify friend or entitled pervert foe. Sleep does tend to be a little harder to get when everything is thrumming with energy, though.]

Your very own stalker? [She laughs at the thought.] I wonder if the mansion will permit some manner of restraining order for us.

[At least the kisses didn't happen, right? Thank God for that. Especially kisses from strange men.]

Ah...coffee, yes. Please. I'm afraid there's very little exciting news, I- Oh! Yes, I went down to the beach. I've been visiting it quite often, now that I think about it.

[Evelyn wishes she didn't feel so guilty about that, but it is the one place in all of Wonderland that reminds her of home.]

...I have found it interesting that the sense of direction here doesn't seem altogether too relevant. I've watched the sun rise and set on separate occasions over the ocean.

[identity profile] sadfreezingbrit.livejournal.com 2011-08-27 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, we do have a neighbourhood watch of sorts, though... I'm sure they're trying, it's just... there doesn't seem to be much room for order around here.

[ Philip pours Evelyn a cup of coffee. On a beach-sun-related note... ]

If there was then somebody ought to lock Wonderland itself up for life, considering what it does to the laws of physics.

[ After last night's encounter with Daniel he would very much rather not just hand the cup to Evelyn. He puts it down right next to her instead. ]

...Coffee's on the desk, to your left.

[identity profile] libraritology.livejournal.com 2011-08-27 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
That's true, I had almost forgotten. You're a physicist, aren't you? This place must have been the most peculiar thing you'd ever seen when you arrived here.

[Since, you know, it's not every day that people go to Greenland at the behest of their father and find the horrible, traumatizing sight of zombie dogs and mutilated, alien-virus people. That only happens once in a blue moon.

Evelyn feels around for the coffee mug and handles it carefully, blowing on it before taking a sip.
]

What did you think when you got here?

[identity profile] sadfreezingbrit.livejournal.com 2011-08-28 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
[ Well. About that... ]

I--

[identity profile] sadfreezingbrit.livejournal.com 2011-08-28 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
What did you do?! What did you-- Turn it back! Turn it back!

[identity profile] sadfreezingbrit.livejournal.com 2011-08-28 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
...Oh wow, the heating actually works. Huh. This is pretty comfy.

- END FLASHBACK -

[identity profile] sadfreezingbrit.livejournal.com 2011-08-28 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
I couldn't believe it. [ Philip swallows. ] Any of it.

[ Well, at least that much is true. ]

I thought I'd gone insane [-r ] that- that I-- I kept waiting for everything to turn back to normal, but...

[ He shrugs. ] It never did.

[identity profile] libraritology.livejournal.com 2011-08-28 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
[That sounds...really horrible, actually. Evelyn can't say that she had a very good time, either, but at least several very nice individuals helped her get acclimated to the place.]

How long was it before you...got used to everything? I can't say that I know much about the future, but it can't be as ridiculous as Wonderland.

[identity profile] sadfreezingbrit.livejournal.com 2011-08-28 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
It has its own ways of being ridiculous, I'm sure.

[ The following smile will go sadly unnoticed unless Philip's facial muscles are a lot louder than he perceives them to be. ]

...Honestly? Right now I'm trying not to raise my voice despite this cup of coffee creaking like an old wooden floor and... maybe things aren't quite as confusing anymore, but... I don't think I'm used to it yet. [ Beat. ] Or ever will be, for that matter.

[identity profile] libraritology.livejournal.com 2011-08-28 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
[While Evelyn can't see the changes in expressions on his face, she can feel the humming of his body decreasing, smell the cloying, sickly-sweetness again. It's not Philip, but she wishes she knew what it was.]

...I'm glad you say that.

[Concentrating on the heat of the mug in her hands is much easier than admitting that she feels entirely unprepared for everything that Wonderland has to offer.]

I was beginning to worry that I was one of the few...well, everyone here seems so confident about tackling whatever this place throws at them.

[A sigh.]

And I'm not. You know, I was always telling people how much I wanted an adventure, and this isn't quite the adventure I was expecting.

[Nor is it the one she's really destined for, but let's not split hairs.]

[identity profile] sadfreezingbrit.livejournal.com 2011-08-28 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Despite her gladness Philip wonders if he really wanted Evelyn to know about his insecurities. But that's just the thing with being sleep-deprived, sometimes the filter between your brain and your mouth can't quite keep up anymore.

And sometimes that's not a problem. Hey, sometimes it even helps getting things out in the open. But sometimes...
]

{ See, that's 'cause the only adventure a broad like her oughta have is another apron to get some colour into the kitchen. Maybe a spankin' new saucepan, but that's pushin' it already. }

Wow, really? That is ridiculous, even for you.

[ Sometimes those things just happen to be conversations which are very much supposed to remain an unspoken secret between you and the voice in your head. ]

[ And once you open your mouth to get on with the actual conversation you have to find that words suddenly escape you as your attention is drawn to one single question:

Did... did I just say that out loud?

Oh God.

Oh God, Jesus, no. No. Nonono-- No, please...

Please don't say I said that out loud.

[The hairs on the back of her neck prickled before Philip even replied. What Evelyn had been expecting was perhaps a reassuring sentiment, or another tangent of conversation about adventures, or even a brief story about Philip himself.

What she got was something else entirely.
]

...excuse me?

[She bristles immediately, because...because this is a sore enough subject in her own time period, and he's reassured her before that things have changed by the time the twenty-first century begins. Coffee clenched in her hands, shoulders tensed, she wishes to high Heaven and back she could actually see his face right now.

Evie expects this kind of response from someone like the "emperor", or in a jesting manner from her brother, but not from Philip.
]

I'm ridiculous?

[identity profile] sadfreezingbrit.livejournal.com 2011-08-28 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Well. Shit. ]

{ See, it's moments like that I keep hangin' out with you. That and the whole being kinda stuck in your body problem... }

No!

[ Shitshitshit. ]

N-no, I--

[ Shitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshit ]

I-- I wasn't- that--

[ PS.: Shit. ]

I am... so sorry, I was--

[ Close your eyes. Pull through. ]

Talking to somebody else.

[ Deep breath. ]

...

[ ...Okay, another one. ]

My communication device, I-- I just... got a text message and I- I read it, I didn't think, it just slipped out, I am really sorry.

[ We did mention shit, right? ]

You are not ridiculous. Not you.
Edited 2011-08-28 19:44 (UTC)

[identity profile] libraritology.livejournal.com 2011-08-28 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Talking to somebody else.

[Evelyn repeats slowly, enunciating every syllable. It takes her a moment to even remember what a text message is, let alone relax and consider that it was just some kind of misunderstanding.

White-knuckling her coffee mug, she lowers one foot flat against the floor. Don't the communication devices vibrate when they send messages? She didn't feel anything. She still doesn't feel anything, certainly not the electric pulse of a transmitting radio.

It's all wrong, though. He's not telling her something. The heartfelt reassurances that he didn't mean her would be more encouraging if she could look at him. As things are, all Evelyn can do is furrow her brow and try not to seem hurt.

...well. Hurt and angry. Jonathan always said she'd make a damn fine pugilist.
]

Philip, if you'd rather talk to somebody else, I can always just make my way back down to the second floor.

[And here she had been planning on telling him about the strange writing left on her mirror the morning after they'd had drinks!]
